Hi Brian - I thought you would still be getting used to having a shed, rather than a carport. Need to lose that centre pillar and put a full-width door in. Makes a huge difference when you can centralise the car you're working on, for better access...

You're welcome to store your 944 in my garage Brian..but only because it's guards red though. :P

How long have you had the 914?

Even if the pillar is load bearing, you would be better off without it.  The resulting collapse of the structure will only serve you in a positive manner - think of the insurance assistance in the rebuild.

You're welcome.

The 944 is off in a friends garage for the time being, and the space is being used to tear the 914’s motor apart. So far no need to rip into that centre pillar, yet.

Nice find! There's only a single one on Carsales at the moment.

Unfortunately for you, you have bought the most unloved Porsche (save for maybe the 924 auto) money can buy.  Water cooled, front engined and an auto transmission - the trifecta of dislike.

Fortunately for you, they are an absolute cracker of a vehicle. The balance is awesome, the driving experience is top shelf and the gearbox is great. Auto mode for laziness (but learns stuff and if used properly will also pick the right gear when fanging it)  and of course you also have the dial a gear yourself mode and it's a lot of fun.

Enjoy.

A mate of mine owned that car for a number of years, sold it to somebody on the Sunny Coast. Ex Japan car.

That would make sense given the overseas spec front and rear bumpers. Looks like a nice car though. :)

The 968 also looks very promising in photos. How hard is a manual conversion on a 968...

I made enquiries on that S2, thought it was prob OK for the money, but bought something else instead. Would be good to find out how you get on with it.

Re your 968 Tip, I asked this a few years ago when I was looking…

TL;DR - if you want a manual, buy a manual!

In the US, where there's lots of choice in the market, this is certainly true. Why spend 20-30 hours on a conversion (where you likely had to buy a whole manual car to make it work anyway!)?

Here, with such slim pickings available (and autos way cheaper once the seller realises it's not worth anywhere near what a manual is) I think it's a viable option - but only if you want to twist the spanners yourself.

That said, finding a suitable 6 speed LSD 968 box, torque tube, clutch, flywheel, pedal box, etc will not be easy (and if anyone has one, he won't be selling them cheap).

All of the above said, if you had to pick an auto front engined "transaxle" - then that 968 is the one!

I sent parts to a guy up in Darwin converting his 968 tip to 6 spd right now. not sure if he is on these forums but i'll send him the link to this thread. He is definitely putting in the research.

His is a forever car though as it's a supercharged cab and he obviously intends to keep it and enjoy it. There are a few kiwis that have converted early and late 944 and 968 to manual also.

I had an auto '78 924 for several years and I still enjoyed it and I've had manual 944's since because they are widely available. As above Australasia doesn't get the selection for 968 manuals so if you have the means, the money and the determination and you're not worried about originality I would go for it.

Not mentioned so far is the Audi A0e swap. Which is more readily available due to the higher volume of Audis’ produced. My understanding is the 968 6 speed transaxle is related to the A0e transaxle.
This topic has be discussed on the Boost Brothers you tube channel in concert with there 5 cylinder turbo conversion of the 944.

Also discussed on Rennlist:

I saw this one on Carsales again,

I did chuckle at this "It is a standard car with no modifications "

apart from the LH/RHD conversion 🙂
