What did you do to your Porsche today ???

Unfortunately wasn’t that fast in qualifying.  Gearbox issue.  Thought that would be the end of the show.  We had a spare box but as I’m here with my mate a Terry and my son, little chance of doing anything but look at it

Then the true spirit of motorsport comes out.  Across the way in the GT paddock are a grouProf guys taking car of a GT3R.  Terry knows the team mechanic.  He used to be his apprentice back at the Porsche many years back

We ask him to come over and have a look at the linkages as we think the shifting problem could be there.  He does but says he thinks the problem is inside. Calls his old boss from back in the day and he also agrees.  So he jumps under the car, pulls off a plate at the bottom and immediately sees the issue - and bits of metal

By this time it’s 530 pm and they should all be off having beers and telling their driver what a legend he is

Instead, he says “you’ve got a spare gearbox.  Go and get it.  My personal best in one hour to change one”.

He then grabs his 3 mechanics and it’s on.  These blokes are the best.  Under a car that’s not theirs for a guys they don’t know, covering themselves in gearbox oil and other shit literally dragging the engine and gearbox out from under the car once we’d dropped it out, swapping over all three ancillary stuff and then putting it back in

By the time it was all back in, night had fallen and everyone had gone.  I took it for a run around the paddock and it worked

To say I’m grateful is an understatement.  In thanking them each of them just said they were happy to help get the car going.  “You came here to race” said the young apprentice”

Thanks to Steve and his boys, I can

Oh, it took 2.5 hours.  The personal best was using a hoist .... and he had to fabricate a bracket this time!

Grateful does not even begin to express how I feel about what they did

With any luck the rest of the week will do their effort justice.

Here are pics showing something that you’d normally see from some race paddock in the 70’s!

All good.  We used the trophy race to make sure it all worked OK.  Had a bit of vapour lock so missed the last few laps but that’s sorted so now we’re chasing the chocolates.   The other cars are so much faster so I have the track to myself.  Does not get better than that!!

I got one of the Rennline phone mounts, good product, fits perfectly, but my phone isn't magnetic and the steel plate interferes with wireless charging so I fabbed up this out of some spare material I had in the shed.

I was going to use aluminium, but I think the copper goes better with the savannah beige. It's raw at the moment, but might finish it with something so it holds the colour after I give it a polish.

Purists look away now - You've been warned!! :o

Step 1: Grab some mesh from SuperCheap, remove bumper and mould accordingly

Step 2: While you're there, run the cables for the camera so you can spin out while driving and know how far you are when parking

Lip with three stage sanding and final being scotch pad. Glad I didn't plastidip it as the last run saw it scraped some more. Either way - a great improvement on previously!!1417310458_2021-12-0315_27_45.thumb.jpg.8eeb25979d648cbbb371a5c258c0c5ce.jpg

Step 3: Install dual camera head unit. While you're there replace the blown out door speakers and install missing rear speakers

The final piece of the puzzle was completed today being the alcantara trim pieces

Finally got my car back on the road!! After a year long project that had heaps of scope creep and plenty of life happenings slowing progress..

I started with a refresh of bushings and bearings concept in mind..

Ended up doing a KW Coilover conversion, Elephant Racing mono ball rear bushings, polybronze front bushings, 935 Spring Plates, Tarret adjustable drop links, Elephant Racing Finned Oil Lines, New engine oil lines, replace all the bearings in the steering rack, replace wheel bearings, led indicator and brake light retrofit… and lots of powder coating, ceramic coating, cleaning and  painting and zinc plating of parts..

Now hopefully it doesn’t pour down for the Track Day on Tuesday 🤞

 Do it!!

You have a hoist, you can put it on the hoist and easily clean the undercarriage afterwards.

Time to check the performance of the new suspension elements!!

replace all the bearings in the steering rack

Curious on your take on the condition of the original bearings - was it 'really' needed to replace them?

This is soon on the horizon for me and wondering whether a clean and repack would suffice?

To be honest the steering rack bearings weren't urgent or overly necessary, what was beneficial was skimming the 'puc' it had a small groove in it that was machined out.

But it turns out those bearings are super cheap to buy, less than $20!!, so since you're in there you may as well.
