So if the yellow CS sold for mid 2's in 2 weeks and a 50km touring can't sell for mid 1's then I guess we know which one is more sort after ? Or was it just because of the 11 kms? Maybe i should own one of each, just to be sure

Seriously , sold or they drugged the guy. One sale dont define a market , no fool is worth following

Buy the the touring and offer 20k below and lets get real

Question out of left field..

Are (in particular 996) GT3's monsters in terms of price to service and maintain..?

I know its a bit of a silly question - if you can't afford, don't ask - but I'd like a bit of confirmation either way.

TIA.!

Most owners have no idea they dont drive em mate .. especially the 996's they are rare as ;) 997 , 9,000kms , so far $13k , not tracked .. probably still more on the per lap rate , as it aint been tracked  in that .

Maint on a low Kms car , well , plus a set of tyres .. its hard to improve on a 997 CS mate .. I guess you could take shit out and pretend its a 996 I guess like the upgrades dont matter.

Obviously depends on the type and level of usage. I've previously considered buying a 996 cup car and on the whole for the hours (all being track time) they are pretty robust and relatively inexpensive when compared to similar GT level track cars. The 996 cup and 996 GT3 are not hugely different, biggest cost is fuel, then tyres! @James P would be able to fill you in more but on the whole they are pretty good value in terms of performance vs running costs.

Cant comment re 997's though.

Agree with Hugh, if you track your GT3 or most Porsches - over time biggest cost is tyres, then service.

GT3 road car with small amount of track work (which is compulsory BTW) I would allow $4k p.a.

If you keep it long enough and use it, you might even break even. If you don’t, who cares - just enjoy the car

If you look at your local OPC website, their fixed price servicing is about the same for a 996 GT3 as a comparable Carrera - at least it is in Brisbane.

However, if you start looking at wear items, pricing gets more substantial.  Front brake pads alone are about $900 a pair for the 996 .2 fronts alone + installation (which is very simple), rears a little less $. Suspension arms & drop links about the same as a Carrera / Boxster until you start sourcing the adjustable GT3 control arms and shocks - big $$. Cooling & A/C system rads and overflow reservoir same as Carrera's. Bodywork items roughly equivalent to Carrera / Boxster  except for the aero kit - I think the 6.2 rear wing alone is over $7,000.

The really big costs surround the engine and transmission - there was talk over on Rennlist last year quoting something like $US40,000 for the engine alone. That equates to $1.2 million here in Australia, so don't drop a valve or break a rod .....

At 200+ an hour .. I really wonder what you get ?.. I have never paid so much as as being positioned for very simple work.. in most cases.

These cars are modular.. most motor sport shops , deal with mechanical items on these things every day. Sometimes every week or two on a cup car .. they are very engineered.

I get the specialised info from computers and plug in, but I have already seen 50% margins in parts. Mine will be serviced at the dealer but my extra consumables , dealt with in other ways perhaps by a cup car prep team.

Yeah I didn’t say I liked the price as such for a car I’d done 2000ks in in a year but more to keep the service book up for the day I have to deal with a buyer who’s going to drive me mad with bullshit if I don’t have every service done by a PC

las t year u was quoted 1100 to supply and fit new brake ducts??

i bought them ex UK 48pounds had them fitted for free this year actual cost less than a$100

The 996 cup & 997 GT3 are about the same cost to maintain if used in the same way i.e 100% track time in my case, the main running costs are tyres, disks, pads, brake fluid, oil & fuel, here is what i have paid recently as they are the same parts for both cars

Tyres: Cup slicks Hankook set $2100. GT3 Yokohama A050 set $2600 i think?

Disks: Fronts $440 for the pair.. yes thats $440 AUD for 2 front disks they are DBA motorsport disks for a Cayenne

Pads: Front & rear set $750 Ferodo's from the UK

Brake fluid: Castrol SRF $130 for 1 liter

Oil filter: $30 to $40

Castrol 10w 60 oil: $75 each you need 2 for a change & i change it every 200km or every second track day in the Cup Car (change it every 5 track days in the 997 GT3)

I do all the minor work my self thats what i enjoy (anything big I'm lucky i have friends that are ex Porsche motorsport mechanics with hoists)

The 996 GT3 will be about the same cost

James,

Do you use the Castrol 10W60 oil in your GT3 as well as the Cup car?  I hear its the "go to" oil to use for the track - but what about road use, or are both you cars purely track hounds?

I've been contemplating changing from Shell 5W40 Helix Ultra (which I have used for years) to something that helps recuce cold startup noise after the car has sat for a week or two.....

The oil debate is an endless one.. my old 997 GT3 was track use only & i used 10w60 same as my current 996 Cup Car. i would use the same10w60 if it was a road car as I'm after protection rather than performance.. Just change it more often

Eeveryone will have a different opinion

For that car, at that price, two ways of looking at it being yours:

1- current bargain

2- your not a cat, you only live once

Clever ad @hugh, the dalliance with the water cooled dark side has come to an end?  Looks sensational as always.
